It’s Alive!

But is it? Take a cheek swab, reprogram the cells into stem cells, then grow mini brains in a dish. They’re not just any brains, but ones carrying your exact genetic background – your brains. Stem cells and organoids have become powerful tools to study brain development, evolution and diseases. We can fuse them, transplant them into animals, send them to space, but where to draw the line? They are alive, but do they think, feel or have consciousness? Dr Rana Fetit (The University of Edinburgh) explores stem cells and what we could, or should, do with them.
