So many aliens in sci-fi films are six foot tall with four limbs. And they live on planets that are remarkably Earth-like. Dull. Dull. Dull. There is more interesting life on the seabed. Is this lack of creativity down to film studio budget restrictions? Or perhaps there is a scientific reason behind it. Dr David Fairhurst (The University of Edinburgh) asks: what is life?
