In order to develop resilient, successful performers we expose children to a persistent culture of abuse in pre-professional ballet training. Young ballet dancers appear to exhibit vulnerabilities to abuse. Many former pre-professional training dancers exhibit significant mental health issues related to their experiences in dance training. Erin Sanchez (The University of Edinburgh) asks parents: is the possibility of being a great dancer worth the risk? And is the real dangerous idea that dancers could someday be strong, safe and healthy, enough to reject this broken culture?
