The
core programme consists of observational stand-up comedy, but
careful programming ensures a variety of compatible styles and
performers on any one bill. About half of our weekend spots go
to acts resident in Scotland, and the other half to visiting
performers from throughout the UK and abroad, who will usually
be booked to appear on a frequency of a year or more. The
premium end of week stand up shows are anchored by the club’s
team of experienced resident comperes.
In both Edinburgh and Glasgow, the
all week opening has allowed a range of specialist shows to be
developed midweek:
New sketch shows such as
Melting Pot and Rough Cuts have provided a platform
for new writing and performance;
Ensemble improv shows such as
The Stand Players and Dance Monkey Boy Dance have
provided a platform for experiment and diversity.
The clubs have become a popular
venue for the Scottish leg of UK tours by established comedians
such as Daniel Kitson;
Wicked Wenches, a new all woman
showcase which fuses stand up and sketch performance, provides a
rare platform for women to get on in this industry.
Both clubs aim to present
theatre quality performances in environs with a pub/cabaret
atmosphere rather than a theatre/artspace environment. This
relaxed and comfortable setting is particularly attractive to
new kinds of audience unfamiliar with, or unattracted to,
conventional theatre productions. Audiences can drink during
performances and there are two short intervals.
Stand up comedy depends
critically on the dynamic which is established between performer
and audience. Too few people in too large a room can spell
disaster no matter how good a show might be artistically. The
clubs therefore aim to have a high density of audience, and not
all of the venues are seated. Whilst this has on occasion
attracted adverse comments from people wanting more room or
seats, the packed nature of the gigs adds more immediacy and
energy to the show.
