Homer Simpson is diabetic, so is Halle Berry. Inspector Morse died from complications brought on by neglecting his diabetes. Gary Mabbut played for England as a diabetic and he was type one. Surely Karl Spain, who just last year discovered he too was diabetic, can be funny for sixty minutes?...

This year Limerick born comedian Karl Spain takes himself and his illness as his subject. Sound funny? It will be. Karl's natural, discursive wit; downbeat, occasionally woolly, immensely likeable, has made him a big name in Ireland where his own TV show, Karl Spain Wants A Woman, was a hit. And got him a woman.

In Edinburgh, last year, Karl discovered he was unwell. Initially he did nothing as he was losing weight, but when he thought it might be a problem he went to the doctor. He only had diabetes though. It's not like it was serious or anything, but in discovering more and more about diabetes he realised not only how little he had known about it, but how little most other people know about it also.

Even in Hollywood diabetes information can be wrong. Yes, even in a film like ConAir. He knew he needed to do this show and raise awareness about the condition when he read that 100,000 people in the UK are diabetic and don't know it. Also he'd written loads of material about it and couldn't think of anything else to do a show about.

Twelve months on and now living with the knowledge of the damage he had done to himself he has also discovered that being diabetic makes you funnier. Well... He has learnt the hard way to appreciate the good things in life, come and appreciate him.
