Warning: Contains Traces Of Unadulterated Happiness

Jason Cook returns to Edinburgh with the follow up to his 2007 smash hit show My Confessions.

After performing My Confessions in Edinburgh to critical acclaim, 5-star reviews and sold out houses, Jason has completed his World Tour playing to packed out theatres and rave reviews.

'It's rare to be touched, to the very core, by a comedy performance; a hilarious, dark, and emotional show by British stand up Jason Cook (you can call him Jase) there were tears welling up in many-a punters eyes, and for good reason.'
New Zealand Herald

The best reviews he received though were from audience members who had been to the show and taken his advice at the end, very simply: "Phone your dad". People e-mailed from all over the world wanting Jason to know how much the show had moved them. One gentleman hadn't spoken to his Dad in two years, but the show prompted him to get back in touch and build bridges.

"It was incredible, thinking that the stuff I say can actually connect with people to that extent," says Jason

This year Jason brings us Joy. A show about joy, about how it is all around us, we just have to know how to look for it. And of course, there is a twist at the end.

"I was writing the show and it was nearly finished, then something happened which made me re-evaluate everything the show and ultimately the meaning of the word 'Joy' is all about."

Jason once again puts his own life, even the bad bits, under the microscope with one guarantee: total honesty.

"I learned that with My Confessions, as long as you stick to the truth then what you're saying has more weight. Some people say its easy just telling true stories, but when the stories are very dark and bleak you have to work your comedy socks off to get a show that is funny as well."

One of the things that set My Confessions apart from other shows was its emotional ending, with audience members of all ages and genders leaving the theatre in floods of tears.

"I'm not sure if that's a good advert for your show, having your audience leaving with mascara running down their faces, but I'd be crying with them and it was the most magical feeling in the world. You know that they are feeling what you are feeling and it's rare to get that kind of connection with your audience," muses Cook, disappearing up his own arse.

But Joy is different.

"I've written this one so that by the end, I'm hoping, the audience will be so full of joy we'll be grinning like morons together. We're going to talk about all the things that give us joy, from the daftest little sniggers to things that just make your heart sing."

He even has a warning for his show on every poster and flyer 'may contain moments of unadulterated happiness. If cynical, please stay away.'

"If the hardcore comics can have a warning about how offensive they are, I don't see why I can't have one about how joyful this show is."

So look out Edinburgh, he's back. And this time, he's very happy indeed.

Press Quotes

'For all who have witnessed Jason Cook before you’ll be well aware of the brutal honesty his gags are delivered with. His talent for bonding with audiences on an emotional level and drawing them into his world is what puts him beyond all the comics on the circuit today. His previous Edinburgh show 'My Confessions' was a touching comedy performance, which ripped the emotions out from you, throwing you headfirst into his stories with such a visceral flair it felt as though you were sitting on his shoulder with his angels and demons witnessing the events firsthand. His new show 'Joy' brings his talents full circle; notching it up to eleven and off the scale with the warning – may contain moments of unadulterated happiness
He starts the show displaying his talents to full effect; building up the usual decor of rapport with the audience and finding time to reminisce his last visit to XS Malarkey with a girl in the front row he arranged to be crowd surfed out the door. He is the picturesque jovial prankster, the older brother who finds fun no matter how dark and sinister the situation is and he’s not afraid to show it. Telling stories of being arrested for piracy in Iran and being driven out to the desert in the boot of a car with a gun to his head, all the while thinking ‘the car boot of my mum’s Chevrolet is nicer than this’ sets the tone perfectly.
Suddenly he off in a new direction launching into the joys in his life; how his friends and family have kept him smiling through all the bad luck he has had to endure, and you can’t help but smile with him. The show does take a dark twist and did leave a sour taste in everyone’s mouth when he decided to insult the entire audience. But credit to him, he pulled it all back in an instant. Leaving everyone with the joys of Christmas, Santa hats, losing a loved one and ending with the sight of Toby Hadoke being gladly pelted with all the fresh socks he ever wanted'
