The mesmerising Carey Marx, who'll be bringing his fifth show to the
Fringe is reknowned for balancing on that razorblade which separates
charm from offense...
This year Carey actually met a live midget. The midget kindly explained
that midgets now prefer to be known as 'little people'. So, Carey
altered the wording of one his jokes from 'midget' to 'little person'.
And nobody knew what he was on about.
This year, a woman explained to Carey the reason you should not say the
'C' word. She was wrong.
This year, Carey had two complaints about a joke with an onion in it.
In Careyness, Carey tries to get to the bottom of the rules of
unacceptability and then he spanks that bottom until its cunt falls off.
Based on events that took place this year, he tells a tale of mystery
and thought crime through jokes that boldly decry the incompetent,
rule-obsessed world around him. A laughable world where commonsense
curtsies to mechanical fear like a big girl's blouse on the pinkest of
flamingos. A flamingo that other flamingos should spurn, but, strangely,
instead they emulate its nonsense like sheep-flamingos. But Carey kicks
their legs from under them as if they were stork-sheep-flamingos.
The result is a devilish spouting of thought and idea that examines the
freaky and farcical nature of morality, and Carey's defiant place below
it.
With twisted one-liners, mischievous logic, and outrageous statements he
dissects himself and bleeds some kind of answer. It's an hilarious
non-stop hell-raising quest to find his quintessential comedy position
and sit on it.
Carey's humour can purr seductively or growl in your face. His
performance is charming yet deliciously devious and his amicable
presentation allows him to say the sweetest things whilst he's never
more than an inch from saying the unsayable.
Carey headlines all the top comedy venues and has written and performed
four successful Edinburgh shows. This one is his most thoughtful, daring
and funny.
Compelling as a full and freshly shaven moon, uncomfortable as wooden
underpants, this show runs naked through a cactus field.
