The term 'legend' gets bandied about with distressing ease these
days but in the case of Arnold Brown it's
appropriate.
A genuine veteran who was onstage at the opening of The Comedy
Store in 1979 (shortly before being gonged off by Alexei Sayle),
he also has the rare distinction of having been Frank
Sinatra's warm-up at Ibrox. |
This slow-burning accountant-turned-comic has the best timing in the
business and this is his 21st show at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
"I remember watching two drama students audition to join the Comedy
Store," says Arnold. "Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders: 2008 is the
year of their farewell stand-up tour. I am pleased to say that I intend
to keep on performing."
Over the years he's popped up on TV, videos, films and voice-overs, as
well as doing the occasional after-dinner speech. Radio is a particular
favourite and he especially enjoyed reading on air his novella, Are You
Looking At Me, Jimmy? (Methuen), as well as presenting documentaries on
Stanley Baxter, Ivor Cutler and modern Scottish comedy.
So what's the new show about? For a start there will be a lot of name
dropping. Jesus Christ. The Pope. Osama Bin Laden and, of course, God.
He will also be talking about Accents, Loners, Jews, Christians,
Moslems, Longevity, Sofas and Couches, Binge-Drinking, Patisseries,
Drugs, Sex, The Financial World and much more.
His special guest, Ian Macpherson, is a hilarious Irish stand-up.
"I've always admired his quirky, literate style. Like myself, he's
widely acknowledged as 'the comedians' comedian' although, to be
honest, my real ambition has always been to be regarded as 'the bank
manager's comedian.' Incidentally, there is definitely no guarantee
that we will be able to divulge the secret of happiness by the end of
the show."
