Andy Zaltzman boldly unbuttons the cloak of civilisation, but is perplexed and perturbed by what he finds lurking beneath.

Andy Zaltzman returns to both the mid-afternoon and The Stand to sacrifice his latest comedic offering on Edinburgh's Fringe altar.

The imminent and long-awaited beginning of the post-Bush era, the bafflingly sabre-toothed credit crunch, Big Freddie Food Crisis, and Life In General are amongst the many issues and demands cluttering up Zaltzman's 2008 in-tray.

He, like most other people, has always done his best to ignore, misunderstand or trivialise such matters in the hope that they will go away without smashing too many of his windows. But now the time has come to pick up the baton of change, hold it proudly above his head, and club some sense into himself with it.

Thus it is that Zaltzman, who has now officially registered his 1,000th career laugh and scored a 61.8 LPAJ index at last year's Festival, has girded himself to remove The Cloak Of Civilisation, no matter how warmly comforting its brightly-coloured spandex exterior may be, and without regard for the feelings of the embarrassingly out-of-condition tummy beneath.

Zaltzman has garnered an admirable mixture of positive, neutral and negative reviews throughout his career. This section would normally contain carefully screened and edited selections of these, made to appear as if they had been plucked unvarnished from the positive category. However, Zaltzman's conditioning team has advised him that it is not good to live in the past, so press quotes have been banned from this press release.
